Nigeria has just conducted its census. The result will soon be available. This Census 2006 exercise was supported by UNDP and UNFPA and will give more accurate population figure and a new baseline from which to calculate human development indicators. The census programme has demonstrated that the UN System in Nigeria is a credible partner through which large programmes in an expansive and complex country can be implemented. This combined US$121 million UNDP/UNFPA joint programme was funded by the EU and DFID. The actual support ranged from training (of future trainers, facilitators, enumerators, supervisors), to technical support/advocacy (publicity, data processing equipment, and capacity building).
