The UN Joint Programme of support on HIV/AIDS is a collaborative initiative of the ten UN Agencies in Nigeria on one hand, and the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria on the other hand. The development of the UN Joint Programme of Support on HIV/AIDS is a committed and deliberate follow up of the UNCT to the mandate derived form the 12 December 2005 letter of the UN Secretary General to all UN Resident Coordinators demanding the institutionalizing of Joint UN programmes.
The developed plan has been synchronized with the elements of a number of strategic documents such as the National Strategic Framework (NSF) which guides Nigeria's response to AIDS, the November 2007 National AIDS Priority Plan (NAPP), the HIV/AIDS component of the UNDAF and the MDGs of Nigeria. There is a further link to the general country context of the "Three Ones Principle" and the complementary efforts of scaling up towards Universal Access for Prevention, Treatment and Care & Support.
The UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS (UNTG) implements the Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS in six focal states which are Benue, Edo, Ondo, Kaduna, Cross River and Taraba. Institutional Framework for HIV/AIDS Joint Programme developed, documented & operational in 6 focal states: Increased access and availability to prevention services (UNICEF & UNFPA) Improved access to ART and care and support (WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP) Governance, Civil society engagement and impact mitigation (UNDP, World Bank, UNIFEM, UNICEF, UNAIDS).
