UNAIDS contribution to the end of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) main focus is
to achieve MDG Goal No.6: “to halt and begin to reverse the spread of
HIV/AIDS by 2015”. UNAIDS co-sponsors include: UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA,
UNODC, UNHCR, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, WORLD BANK and WFP. UNAIDS is the main
advocate for global action on HIV and AIDS. It leads, strengthens and
supports an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV,
providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals
and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the
epidemic.
UNAIDS Nigeria goal, objectives and key results, 2004-2006
The United Nations Theme Group on HIV/AIDS (WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, World
Bank, UNIFEM, IOM, UNODC, UNHCR, ILO), working under the leadership of
the UN Resident Coordinator, chaired by WHO, with UNICEF as vice chair,
and facilitated by the UNAIDS Country Coordinator, constitutes UNAIDS
at country level. The UNAIDS Secretariat operates as a catalyst and
coordinator of UN actions on AIDS.
The overarching goal of UNAIDS in Nigeria is to support the country to
achieve the Millennium Development Goal No. 6 on HIV/AIDS.Specific
objectives and key results for 2004-2006 include fostering leadership
for an effective response and to track, monitor and evaluate the
country response, strengthening partnerships and coordination
mechanisms, promoting and strengthening the management of strategic
information, mainstreaming HIV/AIDS into development frameworks and
mobilizing technical and financial resources.

2010. The national consultation led by
Resource Mobilization
Technical assistance was provided for the development of the Global
Fund proposal for Round 5 and 6 and support towards the restructuring
of the Country Coordination Mechanism (CCM) in line with the Global
Fund guidelines.
Engaging and Strengthening Civil Society and Private Sector
The civil society coordination mechanisms have been strengthened by the
reinforcement of the linkages between constituencies through the
re-engineering of the civil society HIV/AIDS structure. In addition the
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Forum and the Greater Involvement of
People living with HIV and AIDS (GIPA) Forum have been established.
UN Workplace Programme
A UN work place programme is in place that provides prevention and

the leadership of the UN Learning Team.
