The
United Nations Theme Group on HIV/AIDS (WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank,
UNIFEM, IOM, UNODC, UNHCR, ILO), working under the leadership of the UN
Resident Coordinator, chaired by WHO, with UNICEF as vice chair, and
facilitated by the UNAIDS Country Coordinator, constitutes UNAIDS at
country level. The UNAIDS Secretariat operates as a catalyst and
coordinator of UN actions on AIDS.
The overarching goal of UNAIDS in Nigeria is to support the country to
achieve the Millennium Development Goal No. 6 on HIV/AIDS.Specific
objectives and key results for 2004-2006 include fostering leadership
for an effective response and to track, monitor and evaluate the
country response, strengthening partnerships and coordination
mechanisms, promoting and strengthening the management of strategic
information, mainstreaming HIV/AIDS into development frameworks and
mobilizing technical and financial resources.
