UNDP’s contribution to the end of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
As head of the UN Development Group, UNDP leads global and national
campaign for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. In
Nigeria, UNDP works with the government, development partners, and
civil society groups to create awareness and advocate for the resources
and commitment necessary for the achievement of the MDGs. UNDP provides
support to the production of the annual MDG Report for Nigeria, to the
MDG Office and the Millennium Village Project in Ondo and Kaduna states.
UNDP in Nigeria
The UN’s global development network, UNDP has been in Nigeria since
1960 when the country became independent. As in other parts of the
world, we have been a force for change, helping the government and the
people of Nigeria to create and share solutions to emerging challenges
of development. We offer policy advice, advocate for change and
mobilize resources to facilitate sustainable human development in
Africa’s most populous country.
In the current programme cycle, which is running from 2003 to 2007,
UNDP Nigeria is focusing on four programme areas in response to
prevailing global challenges and identified national priorities. UNDP
works with the Federal Government and 18 State Governments in four
practice areas, all geared towards significantly reducing the level of
poverty and achieving the MDGs in Africa’s most strategic country.
Focus Areas:
- Governance and Human Rights
- Poverty Reduction
- Energy and Environment
- HIV & AIDS
In addition, UNDP Nigeria engages in advocacy campaign for gender
mainstreaming and launches global, national and sub-regional Human
Development Reports, which help spur policy debates and galvanize
necessary action. As the lead agency of the UN Development Group, UNDP
also coordinates global and national efforts for the achievement of the
Millennium Development Goals, the far-reaching, simple and achievable
goals agreed to by world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit of 2000.
