UNESCO’s contribution to the end of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals
UNESCO’s Mission addresses Building Peace in the mind of Human Beings,
promoting living together and quality life improvement through
Education, Science, Culture and Communication.
The National Commissions in Member States, cooperating with
Stakeholders are playing a key role in the design and implementation of
UNESCO’s Support Programmes to countries, with respect to the six year
medium strategy defining the orientation of Interventions.
For sake of concentration, three Key Initiatives are being implemented, internationally:
- Teacher Training Initiative for Sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA);
- Literacy for Empowerment, within the framework the United
Nations Decade on Literacy and for promoting Education for Sustainable
Development (LIFE);
- Prevention Education on HIV and AIDS (EDUCAIDS)
In implementing the mission, UNESCO performs through five functions: as
a Capacity Builder; a Laboratory of Ideas, a Standard Setter, a
Clearing House and a Catalyst for International Cooperation.
UNESCO in Nigeria
The United Nations Educational, scientific and cultural Organization’s
(UNESCO) priority is determined by the needs at country level.
In Nigeria, the Organization is contributing to the achievement of Education for all and MDGs through:
- the
support to equitable access to quality basic education, especially in
deprived communities, including girls’ access to Education
- the empowerment of women through literacy, life skills and income generating activities
- building capacities for teachers at all levels for Quality Education
- Improving Science and Technology Education at Primary, Secondary, Colleges of Education, Universities and Mono/Polytechnics
- Policy Reform & Curriculum review; extending the use of
Information and Communication Technologies in Education and promoting
Learning Communities.
UNESCO also helps the country in building new partnerships with the
private sector and the civil society for achieving the National
Education and Development goals.
